History of Garratt Lane Workhouse
In 1886, a new workhouse was built at Garratt Lane, St John's and St John's Hill became the Union Infirmary. There were several alterations and additions including the erection of a nurse's home in 1898. In 1930, the site became St John's Hospital and after 1948 it functioned as a geriatric hospital. It closed in the 1980s and in the 1990s it was converted to residential use, retaining several of the old buildings.
