Large 24" Double Sided Illuminated Smiths Railway Clock

£2,250.00

An illuminated double‑sided clock with opaline glass dials made by Smiths. c.1930

A striking illuminated Smiths electric clock with twin opaline glass dials, each printed with bold Art Deco numerals that glow beautifully when lit. The original gold paint to the metal case remains intact, showing gentle age and a warm, even surface. One dial has an old historic crack that has been glued and reinforced with a sheet of tempered glass behind, leaving the face stable and secure while preserving its period character. The lighting is controlled by a remote switch allowing the illuminations to be switched off. The original hands now running on a battery operated Quartz movement for modern convenience which can be accessed by hatch to the bottom of the clock casing.

Originally installed in a Newcastle bus station, this is a rare and atmospheric example of Smiths’ public‑service timepieces - functional, architectural, and full of interwar charm.

About the maker
Smiths became one of Britain’s most recognisable producers of public clocks during the early and mid‑20th century, supplying robust electric timepieces to factories, stations, schools and municipal buildings across the country. Their designs balanced clarity and durability: bold numerals, opaline or painted dials, and metal cases built to withstand constant use. Smiths’ electric movements were known for reliability, making the firm a go‑to choice for public authorities and transport networks. Many of their illuminated and double‑sided clocks became fixtures of everyday British life, quietly marking time in workplaces and civic spaces for decades.

Smiths’ public clocks remain sought after today for their strong graphic presence, dependable engineering and unmistakable industrial character.
