An incredibly rare and decorative run of decorative former foundry crucibles. c.1940

A striking collection of mid 20th century foundry crucibles, originally designed and used for melting metals at extremely high temperatures. Decades of repeated firing have produced an extraordinary surface texture and patina, with deep, mottled colours that echo the verdigris tones seen on oxidised copper. Each vessel carries its own unique history of use, giving the group a sculptural, almost geological presence.

Later repurposed as garden planters - a practical and visually compelling second life that suits modern interiors and outdoor spaces alike.

Crucible pots have been part of metalworking since ancient times, built to withstand extreme heat as early smiths melted copper, bronze and later iron. Their thick clay or graphite walls made them essential tools for casting, alloying and refining metal throughout the Industrial Revolution and into modern foundries.

When retired from service, they gain a second life. The fire‑blackened surfaces, weighty forms and mineral patina give old crucibles a raw, sculptural presence. Today they’re repurposed as planters, bowls or decorative objects - valued less for what they once held, and more for their elemental, industrial beauty.
