About the maker
Hadrill & Horstmann emerged in the years following the Second World War, founded by engineer Sidney Horstmann and G.C.T. Hadrill, a slate‑quarry owner. Horstmann was already well known in British engineering: the youngest son of clockmaker Gustav Horstmann, he had spent decades developing precision mechanisms, automotive components, and later the influential Horstmann bogie suspension system used on British tanks.
The new company focused on electrical engineering and became best known for its Counterpoise lamps - elegant, mechanically balanced task lights that used a patented counterweight system to hold their position without springs. These lamps quickly became design icons and remain highly collectible today.
