Elegantly designed machinist's task lamp, made in England by Walligraph. c.1930

A classic Walligraph task lamp of simple, robust construction, built around two steel arms on a heavy‑duty base. The piece retains its original black factory paint throughout, with the distinctive elliptical enamel shade that has become synonymous with Walligraph’s early machinist lamps. The base has an ashtray, or more usefully a parts dish, with the the maker’s mark is debossed into the underside.

A practical and beautifully engineered example of early British workshop lighting.

Rewired with 2m of black twist flex and BS 3-pin plug.

About the maker
Walligraph was the industrial lighting arm of Walter Grafton & Son Ltd, established in Eltham in 1901. Their lights are instantly recognisable: cast‑iron poise, enamel shades, and those beautifully engineered friction joints that hold perfect position. Models like the Localite and Radialite became staples in workshops and drafting rooms, valued for their reliability and quiet elegance.

Today, Walligraph pieces are sought after for the same reasons they were made — honest materials, purposeful movement, and a silhouette that feels both utilitarian and sculptural.
